Handball is one of the four Gaelic games organised by the Gaelic Athletic Association. Its headquarters is located in Croke Park, Dublin. There are approximately 200 handball clubs in Ireland. The national committee of GAA Handball is Ard Comhairle (the central council) on which the president sits as chairman.

Handball is one of the Gaelic Athletic Association’s Charter sports of 1884. It is played on a court with three walls, and is very similar to the Handball played in America, Australia, Canada, and the variations on Handball, Pelota and Wallball played throughout Western Europe, and are all probably of the same origin.

The GAA wrote the first rules for the modern game of handball. Handball was included in the GAA Charter of 1884 as one of the sports to be promoted by the new Association. In 1924 Comhairle Liathróid Láimhe na hÉireann (the Irish Handball Council) was established to promote, develop and organise the sport.
This company comprises a partnership between the GAA and the 'Irish Handball Sports Centre', a local community group. According to the GAA, "its primary purpose is the promotion of handball" and "it can never be repurposed" or "changed in any way or indeed sold without GAA consent".
